Dezoete Cup

De Zoete Cup, Thursday 3rd August, Dean Park.  11am

We are the holders and although the competition took in more teams this year, the same four sides have reached this stage. We hope for good support and will be trying to make it a hattrick of wins. Parking in the ground is permitted although a donation of £1 for this privilege would be appreciated.

Suttoners are usually well supported, let us hope this year is no exception. The bar will be open all day and some refreshments will be available for the players in addition to the bits and pieces you can buy in the pavilion.

The Echo should have a spread about it this Tuesday evening and should mention that a local businessman has offered to double the takings, exactly as Billy Smart, the circus owner, did back in 1952.

Result of Above

We are no longer the holders of this prestigious trophy, having been outplayed, just, by Henstridge in the semi-final last Thursday at Dean Park. Surprisingly we had only ten adult players which, in hindsight, probably cost us at least ten runs, no disrespect to young Tom Barber, which could possibly have made the difference as our total of 85 all out was passed with just three balls remaining. Our bowling and fielding was outstanding and did a lot to help us regain our pride.

Henstridge went on to beat Christchurch in the final who, themselves, won a low scoring semi-final against Winton Sports, with just four balls remaining having chased 130 to win. It was pleasing to see so many of our lads stay on for the day and thanks are due to Alex and Garry Coffin and Ben Clifford for doing the collection.

We raised over £140 pounds at the event and Mick Callaghan, an ex local cricketer, offered to double the take, a marvellous gesture.
